Today, the Lord gives us two short, masterful parables: 'The Parable of the Treasure Buried in a Field' and 'The Parable of the Pearl of Great Price.’ These parables reveal that the Kingdom of Heaven can arrive suddenly—whether by surprise, like a farmer stumbling upon an unexpected treasure while plowing, or through patient devotion, like a merchant finally finding the pearl of a lifetime.

In today’s Gospel, the Lord shares three parables and gives His disciples a private explanation of the Parable of the Weeds in the Field.

The Sea of Galilee was the Lord’s preferred place for teaching. As great crowds gathered around Him, a fishing boat became His pulpit. Because sound travels so well over water, He used it to His advantage to reach the thousands of people gathered on the shore. His favorite way to teach was through parables.

The Lord’s words in today’s Gospel are breathtaking. Their simplicity and clarity speak for themselves. Yet, they trouble the thoughts of Bible scholars and the learned. However, His words do not trouble the humble or “little ones” because they accept them as they are given. Because of their humility, the Heavenly Father reveals His mysteries to them.
